At the southern tip of the wonderful North Sea island of Rømø lies the village of Havneby. You will find Havneby Kro close to the Sylt ferry terminal and directly in the centre of Havneby ( map and how to get there ).We have a wonderful view over the Wadden Sea and the hill with the historic cannons. In Denmark, a Kro is the epitome of an honest country inn with excellent cuisine and fair prices. |
On 16th May 1644, lying with his ship Trefoldigheden (Trinity) in the List Deep, the Danish King Christian IV defeated a Dutch-Swedish fleet. Further battles ensued on 1st July 1644, this time in the Baltic. The King fell to the ground, losing an eye in the process. Those on board thought he had died and ordered the flag to be lowered. Seaman Gram from Ballum disobeyed the order. The Danes fought on and won. The King summoned the brave seaman and offered to grant him a wish. Seaman Gram asked for the sole right to run a ferry service “in perpetuity” from Ballum-Røm. Christian IV granted the strange request; permission to build an inn and the Royal Privilege to sell alcohol followed. For over 300 years (until 1986), the Kro remained in the possession of the Gram-Schmidt family.
The Kro has been run by Helle Thomsen since 2003. Helle trained as a cook and confectioner in Stuttgart – all the more reason to try our home-baked cakes. |
